Viðurnafnið ‚latifolius‘ er dregið af orðunum ‚latus‘, breiður og ‚folium‘, blað. Í fyrstu útgáfu af Species Plantarum hét kvíslin Cephalanthus, en fékk nafnið Nauclea í annarri útgáfu 1762. – Um 20 aðrar tegundir tilheyra ættkvílinni.
Þessi merka uppgötvun færir okkur heim sanninn um það, að grasalækningar eru ekki það fánýti, sem sumir halda fram og sannast hér hið fornkveðna, að „oft eru skilin ráð á skorpnum belg“.
