Á vefsíðu Landgræsðslu ríkisins er pistill um Gunnlaugsskóg í Gunnarsholti á Rangárvöllum, sem kenndur er til Gunnlaugs Kristmundssonar sandgræðslustjóra.

Bændurnir í Skaftafelli, Ragnar Stefánsson o.fl. söfnuðu birkifræi í Bæjarstaðaskógi fyrir Skógrækt ríkisins. Haustið 1938 bar svo við að Hákoni Bjarnasyni, þáverandi skógræktarstjóra, samdi ekki við bændurna um verðið fyrir fræið. Þetta voru stoltir bændur og í stað þess að selja fræið á lægra verði en þeir töldu umsamið, gáfu þeir Gunnlaugi Kristmundssyni sandgræðslustjóra (1907-1947) all nokkuð magn.
Eg man það glöggt, að faðir minn sagði mér frá þessu á sínum tíma og þeirri rekistefnu, sem af þessu hlauzt. Honum þótti þetta miður, því að hann dvaldi löngum í Skaftafelli og taldi Odd Magnússon í Bölta og Ragnar Stefánsson í Hæðum til sinna beztu vina. Þeir komu oft á heimili okkar í Reykjavík og dvöldu þar drjúgan tíma.
Sú saga, sem mér var sögð, er allt önnur en sú, sem gefin er í skyn hér að ofan. Hins vegar geri eg mér ljóst, að menn hafa enga ástæðu til þess að trúa mér frekar en forsvarsmönnum Landgræðslu ríkisins.
Nú hef eg reyndar fundið bréf frá Oddi Magnússyni, sem varpar ljósi á þetta mál. En áður en að því kemur vil eg fara þess á leit við Landgræðslu ríkisins, að hún upplýsi mig um, hvernig stendur á nafni Ragnars Stefánssonar, því að samkvæmt heimildum mínum, og eg birti síðar, var hann alls ekki viðriðinn þessa tilteknu sendingu af birkifræi.
