HEIMSKAUTAFARINN Roald Amundsen náði fyrstur manna að stíga fæti sínum á suðurpólinn árið 1911. Sú ferð hefur lengi verið í minnum höfð, því
að honum tókst með miklu harðfengi að verða mánuði á undan öðrum fræknum pólfara, R.F. Scott, enda þótt hinn síðar nefndi hefði lagt tveimur mánuðum fyrr af stað suður á bóginn. Lykillinn að velgengni Amundsens var sá, að hann hafði 97 grænlenzka sleðahunda með í för.
Frásagnir Amundsens og fleiri af svaðilförum í heimskautaferðum hafa löngum heillað ungt æskufólk. Þrátt fyrir gríðarlega erfiðleika og
allmikla áhættu, sem menn verða að horfast í augu við, er einhver ómótstæðileg þrá til slíkra ferða. Það eru þó ekki nema tiltölulega
fáir, sem láta til leiðast að takast slíka ferð á hendur. Bæði er það, að menn verða að vera mjög sterkir, andlega sem líkamlega, hafa góðan búnað og ekki sízt hafa sterka bakhjarla og styrktaraðila. En það er annað, sem er sameiginlegt þessum afreksmönnum og það er, að þeir eru haldnir ríkri frásagnargleði. Svo hefur og verið alla tíð, að ferðasagan hefur verið óaðskiljanleg ferðunum sjálfum.
Í nóvember 1977 héldu þrír hugrakkir félagar á vit mikilla ævintýra. Hvernig til myndi takast gat enginn sagt fyrirfram. Þeir höfðu ákveðið
að ganga á skíðum á suðurpólinn. Slík ferð krefst mikils og vandaðs undirbúnings og var aðdragandi ferðarinnar bæði langur og býsna erfiður
á köflum. Eftirminnileg eru orð móður bókarhöfundar: »Það duga engar úrtölur, þegar vinna þarf afrek.«
Hinn tólfta nóvember hófst gangan mikla og lauk ekki fyrr en á fyrsta degi nýs árs eða 51 degi seinna og þá höfðu þeir félagar gengið rétt
rúma þúsund kílómetra við kaldar og erfiðar aðstæður.
Nöfn þeirra, sem lögðu í þessa miklu göngu, eru sennilega flestum kunn, en það voru þeir Ingþór Bjarnason, Haraldur Ólafsson og Ólafur Ö. Haraldsson.
Ólafur hefur nú skráð sögu þessa leiðangurs. Hann lýsir eins og bezt verður á kosið öllu umstanginu, sem fylgir ferð sem þessari, og
einkanlega göngunni sjálfri. Allri er frásögninni mjög í hóf stillt, en hún er skýr og látlaus í hvívetna. Samt sem áður er mjög auðvelt að
gera sér í hugarlund við hvílík reginöfl var að glíma. Ekki er ósennilegt, að bókin verði til þess að hvetja upprennandi ofurhuga til dáða.
Bókin er prýdd fjölmörgum myndum, bæði smáum sem stórum. Vissulega er myndefnið ekki mjög fjölbreytt og margar myndir æði keimlíkar. Á hinn
bóginn gefa þær mjög góða sýn á umhverfið. Að auki eru fáeinar vandaðar töflur og skrár yfir tölulegar staðreyndir. Hönnun og allur frágangur bókarinnar er mjög til fyrirmyndar.
