Innan ættarinnar Meesiaceae vaxa fjórar ættkvíslir á Norðurlöndum. Flestar tegundir vaxa í litlum, þéttum þúfum, nema Paludella squarrosa, sem getur myndað stórar breiður. Plöntur eru jafnan ógreindar og uppréttar. Blöð eru egglensu- til mjólensulaga, upprétt, útstæð eða baksveigð. Rif er einfalt og sterklegt; endar neðan við blaðenda.
Gróhirzlur eru perulaga, oftast bognar með langan háls og á löngum stilk. Frumur í barmi eru vel þroskaðar og mynda einfaldan hring, sem rúllast upp, þá er lok fellur af. Opkrans er tvöfaldur og eru ytri tennur styttri en innri tennur, nema hjá Leptobryum spp.
Flestar tegundir vaxa í margs konar votlendi en Leptobryum pyriforme er oft á gróðurlitlum, sendnum blettum og í leirflögum við heitar lindir.
Leptobryum pyriforme var áður talin til Bryaceae (hnokkmosaættar).
