Þegar farið var að greina erfðaefnið DNA , blöstu við ný álitamál. Mjög ólíkar lífverur í útliti geta verið líkar að erfðaefni; þá getur erfðaefnið verið háð því umhverfi, sem lífvera býr við.
Ýmsir eru þeirrar skoðunar, að tegundarhugtakið hafi ekkert gildi og vandkvæði við að skilgreina hugtakið færi mönnum heim sanninn um það, að ekki sé rétt að flokka náttúruna á grundvelli tegunda. Á hinn bóginn kunna menn engin önnur ráð enn til þess að skilgreina lífverur í hættu og fjölbreytni náttúrunnar nema með því að styðjast við þetta hugtak.
Vegna þessarar óvissu veit enginn, hvað til eru margar tegundir í veröldinni og hafa verið nefndar tölur á milli þrjár miljónir og 100 miljónir.
